Opioid Risk Tool

The PRD Program partnered with DFCI Palliative Care to improve patient safety regarding opioid prescribing. Previously, the DFCI Palliative Care clinic used a paper version of the Opioid Risk Tool to collect needed information about risk factors for opioid misuse during initial consultation. Clinicians then manually entered the data into the electronic medical record during or after the visit.

Working with stakeholders and a patient advocate, the PRD Program customized the Mass General Brigham eCare-built electronic Opioid Risk Tool, which now elicits patient responses via the patient portal in advance of a visit, or on tablets in clinic prior to consults.

Benefits

The electronic Opioid Risk Tool integrates patient responses immediately into the electronic medical record, eliminating the need for transcription by the care team. Patients can complete the form at home in advance of an in-person or virtual visit, saving time on the day of the appointment and facilitating clinician access to this very important information beforehand. Patient response data is now available for research and operational use.
