Mission statement

The Bioinformatics group advances DFCI and I&A missions by:

  • Addressing unmet DFCI needs for bioinformatics services across research, clinical, and operational units, in partnership with I&A client service areas
  • Accelerating use of bioinformatics and data science within DFCI through collaborative development of enabling platforms—data, methods, tools, infrastructure, and communities of practice—in partnership with many other I&A and DFCI groups

Within Informatics & Analytics, the Bioinformatics group has expertise in bioinformatics, machine learning, data management, data analysis, visualization, and integration, cloud computing, and software engineering. We work together with I&A client service areas, Strategy and Architecture, and Computational Solutions to provide customized, multi-disciplinary solutions for our customers. We aim to bridge existing Institute data and platform resources with engineering, data science, and bioinformatics support to accelerate computational activities at DFCI and help achieve your goals.

We work on three types of projects:
•    Research: For DFCI scientists, labs, and departments, generally contracted as part of the Informatics Services Core
•    Operations: For clinical operations in collaboration with the I&A COBARIO, and Patient Reported Data teams
•    Strategic initiatives: For high-priority Institute objectives, platforms/infrastructure, and strategic partnerships, e.g., Analysis workflow for Lymphoma targeted sequencing assay, and Microsoft Azure and Google cloud infrastructure.

Support model: Our approach is to deploy personnel that best suit your needs and evolve as your needs evolve, across our multidisciplinary team members, as well as engaging collaboratively with other groups. We usually engage in a longer-term commitment (e.g., 12 months or more) of at least 50% of an FTE to develop a long-term relationship across projects and needs.

Related services at DFCI:
The Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center includes the Biostatistics Core whose members (see list on that page) can assist with data-driven research. The Biostatistics Core is run by the Department of Data Sciences at DFCI, which also houses other computational scientists that are open to collaborations (see list on dept page). The Survey and Data Management Core provides survey data collection and management services.
